We hope you are enjoying the summer, traditionally a quieter time in the rare book trade with an absence of major bookfairs. Acquisitions however, have continued at pace and we offer a small selection of newly catalogued items below. Highlights include the first printing in bookform of Arthur Conan Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes novel 'The Sign of Four', a rare trial or proof dustwrapper for Ian Fleming's Goldinger, and a wonderful and curious, hand printed Winnie-The-Pooh pastiche produced (almost certainly without permission) within a couple of years of the first publication of A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard's 'The House at Pooh Corner'. Signed books include a first edition of Agatha Christie's 'After the Funeral', Terry Pratchett's 'Mort' and Yoko Ogawa's collection of dark tales 'Revenge'.
We hope you find something of interest. As always further details and images are available on request or by clicking through to the website.
Best wishes,
James, Monica, Poppy and Jasmine (we miss Ian).

Elizabeth David's first book and a canonical text in mid-century culinary literature. Elizabeth David discovered her taste for good food and wine when she lived with a French family while studying history and literature at the Sorbonne. David found not only the practical side but also the literature of cookery of absorbing interest and studied it throughout her life. Her debut Mediterranean Food, was followed by French Country Cooking (1951), Italian Food (1954), Summer Cooking (1955) and French Provincial Cooking (1960), each an inspirational classic that changed the outlook of English cooks for ever.

First edition in book form, first printing. Publisher's original dark red cloth with black borders and gilt titles to the upper board and spine, Tissue guarded frontispiece illustration by Charles H. M. Kerr. Black coated endpapers. Publisher's 32 page catalogue dated October 1890 to the rear. A genuinely good or better copy, the binding firm with short tears and fraying to the cloth at the spine tips and some bumping to the corners. The cloth a little marked, the gilt generally bright. The contents, with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, and his pencilled review of the story, dated 4th December 1890 on the black front endpaper (visible in raking light), are entirely complete. There are a few finger marks, the odd foxing spot or corner crease and one page with some offset toning. Some cracking at the gutters of the later pages, the endpapers and inner hinges sound and holding. A decent example in entirely original condition, seldom encountered thus.
In the first issue binding with 'Spencer Blackett's Standard Library' in gilt at the base of the spine (the second issue binding is stamped with Griffith, Farran's imprint), and with all textual first state points including page number "138" misprinted "13" on the contents page, and "w shed" for "wished" on page 56. The second Sherlock Holmes novel was first published in the February 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine under the title 'The Sign of the Four; or The Problem of the Sholtos'. This first edition in book form was published in October the same year. [Green and Gibson A7a].

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with blind-stamped skull with gilt eyes to upper board and titles in gilt to the spine, in the trial or proof state Richard Chopping illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with mild rubbing and bumping to the extremities, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with the occasional light finger mark and a production flaw (small hole) to the blank margin of one page, are otherwise clean throughout and free from inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rare trial or proof state dustwrapper that is a little nicked to the spine ends and fold corners and price-clipped to the lower front flap. The colours are uniformly bright and fresh, the underside of the spine with some needless (almost invisible) tape strengthening at the edges. An attractive example.
The book proof of 'Goldfinger' was printed by the Alden Press and bound in green smooth 'Greek urn' design card covers by A. W. Bain and Co. in January 1959. Only 125 copies were issued, however, far fewer of the proof state dustwrapper will have been produced. At this time, the vast majority of the Bond book proofs were distributed solely in green card covers. Ian Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert writes of Goldfinger "[...] very few sample proof-state dust-jackets were produced [...] Ignoring the tiny handful of trial jackets for either 'From Russia With Love' or 'Goldfinger', proofs only began to appear regularly in a proof-only dust-jacket from 'Thunderball' onwards". Whilst the artwork is identical to that of the published version, the text and layout of the proof state dustwrapper differs in several respects. On the rear panel, the list (and reviews) of Fleming's earlier Bond novels are printed in an incorrect order, starting with 'Live and Let Die' in the proof state, this was corrected to 'From Russia With Love' in the published form. On the front flap, 'DR NO' is capitalised in abbreviated form with a large space between the two words, this was changed to the full spelling 'Doctor No' in the published state. In common with proof state dustwrappers of the later Bond titles, the flap corners remain intact, in the published state they are clipped. [Gilbert A7a (Uncorrected Proof Copies / 1.2). The book in the second state of binding without the small indentation to the upper left of the skull (worn away in the manufacturing process)].

'Door into the Dark', Heaney's second full-length collection, followed three years after 'Death of a Naturalist'. Like the earlier collection, it looks back to the poet's rural upbringing in a language of great sensuousness and immediacy. The volume is dedicated to the author's parents. "His subject is those things which are inherent or inherited. What he praises is to be praised in his own work." (Christopher Ricks, 'New Statesman'). Published on 16 June, 1966, the Faber archive does not record the number of copies printed. (Brandes and Durkan A5a).

Signed by Seamus Heaney and Dennis O'Driscoll in black ink on the title page. 'Stepping Stones' is effectively an autobiography in the form of a series of in-depth interviews with fellow Irish poet Dennis O'Driscoll. Alive with Heaney's own voice, it is a book that illuminates the life and work. "This really is a remarkable book. There isn't a dull, vapid or useless sentence in it; it's about what it is to be human, as much as it is about what it is to be a poet." (Nicholas Lezard, in 'The Guardian').

Inscribed by Eudora Welty (whose quote is printed on the front panel of the dustwrapper) in black ink on the half title "To Patchy / with a warm welcome now / and the next times, / and with gratitude and / the pleasure of our meeting / Eudora / March 31, 1986 / Jackson, Mississippi". The recipient Patchy Wheatley, produced and directed an episode of the multi-award winning arts documentary series 'Omnibus' (S.23, E.10) entitled 'Eudora Welty: One Writer's Beginnings'. The acclaimed documentary aired in America as a edition of the PBS series 'The American Experience'. The [future] Pulitzer Prize winning author Eudora Welty first met Reynolds Price in February 1955. The novelist and short-story writer was coming to Duke University to give a lecture and lead a writing seminar. Price, a Duke senior English major from Warren County, having learned Welty's train would arrive well after midnight and knowing taxis would be unavailable that late, decided to chauffeur her to her hotel in his mother's DeSoto convertible. At the next day's seminar, Welty read Price's short story, 'Michael Egerton' and offered to send it to her agent. There began a friendship that lasted until Welty's death in 2001.

First and only edition. Signed by the author. Hand printed and bound by the author in red cloth with black titles to the upper board. 64mo. 8.5 x 7.5cm. Hand coloured frontispiece and two further illustrations by the author. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some bumping and minor fraying to the spine tips and corners, the cloth a little spotted. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. The lower inner rear hinge is cracked but holding firm. Rare.
Produced in a hand-numbered limited edition of just 25 copies, this example is numbered 13 and signed by Peter McGregor Ross on the colophon. A curious and really quite lovely early Winnie The Pooh pastiche; an original story featuring Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit and Christopher Robin. The book was produced within a couple of years of the first edition of A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard's 'The House at Pooh Corner' (1928), almost certainly without the knowledge or permission of Milne and his publisher Methuen. One would assume it was a semi-commercial enterprise given the presence of a printed price of 'Half a Crown Nett'. Only one copy appears in auction records (this copy), sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet, 27 July 1983. Notably absent from the legendary Pat McInally collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum 'Winnie The Pooh: Exploring A Classic' exhibition (2017-2018).
