First single volume edition, first printing. Original softcover printed with an illustration by Pauline Baynes. A good or slightly better copy, the binding square and firm with a closed tear where the front panel meets both the foot and the head of the spine, and a crease across the front panel. The spine with some cracking and flaking, the extremities lightly rubbed and creased. The contents, with a few small corner creases, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

J. R. R. Tolkien's three 'Lord of the Rings' novels are published here together in one volume for the first time. The cover illustrations are taken from Pauline Baynes' trypich artwork which was first used on the slipcase of the scarce 1963 deluxe 'Lord of the Rings' set.
