First British edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the John Sewell designed dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with some bumping to the spine tips and mild rubbing to the extreme edges, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper that is a little faded to the spine and otherwise without loss or tears. Not price-clipped (35s / £1.75 to the lower front flap). Scarce.

The Urbino born and educated author's second novel. First published in Italian by Garzanti, 'La macchina mondiale' won the Strega Prize in 1965.
