First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the upper board and spine. Monochrome half-tone frontispiece, 22 plates, 21 illustrations in the text, folding coloured map of Vischer's route from Tripoli to Lake Chad. A lovely near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little darkened otherwise the cloth and gilt remains bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks. The folding map with a single short closed tear to the outer edge. .

Inscribed in black ink on the front free endpaper "To Danny / from Hanns / the author / July 7th 1913". Scarce thus. The famed explorer's account of his 1906 journey across the world's largest desert.
