First edition, first printing. Handsomely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in full tan calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Five raised bands with gilt decorated compartments. Red morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece of Shelley's tomb. An almost near-fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the boards and extremities and minor toning to the spine. The contents with the attractive red morocco and gilt ownership label of Margaret Louise Weyerhaeuser, as well as her paper bookplate, to the front pastedown, and the very occasional dot of foxing to a few page margins, are otherwise clean throughout.
Jane Shelley's memoir of her father-in-law, produced in response to Thomas Jefferson Hogg's unreliable 1858 biography of Shelley, and containing the first publication of Shelley's Essay on Christianity as well as accounts of his association and correspondence with various other key Romantic figures. An attractive copy.
