First edition. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in black to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with 8 black and white plates and 17 in-text maps and figures. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with bumping to the spine tips, the cloth a little mottled. The contents, with a previous owners' inscription to the front pastedown, some offsetting to the half title page and occasional spotting, are otherwise clean throughout. The closed text block edges are spotted, with the upper edge somewhat dusty. Production fault to the fore-edge of the title page resulting in two short tears. Complete with the original rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, which whilst complete, has been over zelously strengthened along the edges to the underside. Not price-clipped (12/6 net to the spine).
Gould's exploration of a number of famous but unexplained historical events. "Among his enigmas are such baffling problems as the vocal Memnon, the Barisal Guns, the longevity of Old Parr, and the existence of giants in Patagonia. He discusses the claims of Morrell to the discovery of 'New South Greenland', and of those various gentlemen to have turned base metals into gold; the agency, supernatural or otherwise, which rang the Bealings Bells; the truth about the canals of Mars; and the identity of the island where Columbus made his famous landfall". Scarce in the dustwrapper.
