Published nine years before Stone's groundbreaking 'The Crisis of the Aristocracy', this study of a Genoese merchant who became a member of the Elizabethan landed gentry, was the author's first monograph. A year earlier he contributed the volume on 'Sculpture in Britain in the Middle Ages' to the Pelican History of Art.
