'The Doors of Stone' contains all the poems Prince wished to preserve from his first two books, 'Poems' (Faber, 1938) and 'Soldiers Bathing' (The Fortune Press, 1954), the latter chosen by E. M. Forster in 'The Observer' as one of the three outstanding books he read that year, its title poem described by William Plomer as "perhaps the most noble and memorable English poem of the Second World War". The volume also includes a final section of new poems.
