First edition, first printing. Original black cloth with gilt titles to spine, in the Victor Reinganum illustrated dustwrapper. A lovely near fine, clean and square copy, the contents without inscriptions or stamps. The binding lightly rubbed at the extremities and the text block edges very lightly spotted. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed and nicked pictorial dustwrapper. Not price-clipped (7s 6d net to the front flap). A superb example.

The highly respected 'Detection Club' member's third book, and (probably due to the outbreak of war) by far his scarcest to obtain in dustwrapper. A barrister, later Judge by day, the Cyril Hare pseudonym was a mixture of Hare Court, where he worked in the chambers of Roland Oliver, and Cyril Mansions, Battersea, where he lived after marrying Mary Barbara Lawrence (daughter of Sir William Lawrence, 3rd Baronet) in 1933. He died in 1958 at the age of only 57.
