Author / Artist:

Graves, Robert

London: Jonathan Cape. 1929

First edition, first printing [first state]. Original salmon coloured cloth, with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A lovely very near fine copy, the cloth clean, fresh and without fading, the spine tips lightly bumped. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed dustwrapper which has a couple of tiny closed tears at the top edge of the rear panel and is a little darkened at the extremities. Not price-clipped (10s 6d net to the front flap) and without repair or restoration.

An excellent example of the first state of the author's autobiography, a large part of which is taken up by his experience of the First World War, in which Graves served as a lieutenant, then captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers with Siegfried Sassoon. The long poem by Siegfried Sassoon is present to pages 341-3 (removed from all subsequent issues after the Sassoon's threat of legal action).
