First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author. Original beige cloth gilt titles on a red label on the spine. With map endpapers and four black and white illustrations. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities rubbed and darkened, the cloth a little marked. The contents, with faint spotting to the endpapers and offsetting to the half title, are otherwise clean throughout.
Inscribed by Compton Mackenzie on the flyleaf "To / Robert Rait / from / Compton Mackenzie / October. 1934". The recipient is Sir Robert Rait, a Scottish historian and the Principal of Glasgow University from 1929-1936. A study of two ancient Greek-Persian battles from a Scottish author best known for his novels, particularly 'The Monarch of the Glen'.
