THE WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER Now Newly Imprinted. Stock code: 13086
Limited edition. One of 425 copies. Publisher's original Holland linen-backed, blue paper covered boards with the original white paper label printed in black to the spine. Folio. (iv), 556pp. Ornamental woodcut title, 14 large borders, 18 different frames round the illustrations and 26 initials designed by William Morris and engraved by C. E. Keates, W. H. Hooper and W. Spielmeyer. With 87 wood-engravings designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, cut by W.H. Hooper after drawings by Robert Catterson-Smith. Shoulder and side titles printed in red and the whole printed in two columns in Chaucer type designed by William Morris, the longer titles of poems printed in Troy type, on Batchelor hand-made paper watermarked: Perch. A superb fine example in entirely original condition. The binding is square and firm showing only light rubbing to the extremities and a couple of small marks to the lower board. The linen spine is a touch darkened as is the original printed paper label to the spine. The contents are exceptionally clean and bright throughout, the pages without tears, spotting or offsetting. Housed in a purpose made (c.1960) blue cloth felt lined case, with titles in gilt to the spine. The case is a little worn to the extremities with a few bumps and dings but remains firm and intact preserving the contents most suitably.
A beautiful example of not only the most important book of the Kelmscott Press, but undoubtedly one of the finest books produced in the English language.
