First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with titles in gilt, an illustration of Scott to the upper board and a gilt vignette of the 'Discovery' to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with a portrait photogravure frontispiece, 4 colour plates, 28 black and white plates, a facsimile note, and a folding map. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with just a little rubbing to the extremities and minor wear to the bottom corner of the upper board. The contents with a neat contemporary previous owner's inscription to the front free endpaper and scattered foxing to page edges are otherwise clean throughout. A bright, attractive example.
