First edition in English of an important early work on American natural history and a classic in North American travel literature. Three volumes. Illustrated with a large folding map and six engraved plates. 8 page subscribers list at the beginning of vol II; 14 page index at the end of vol III. Twentieth century half leather over marbled boards, titles in gilt to the red morocco labels to the spine. Marbled endpapers. Penciled ownership name, and the ink stamp of Westminster Library to the title page of each volume. Pages unevenly toned and with minor spotting throughout. The folding map with two closed tears at the folds (without loss). Closed tear to the margin of p.79, seemingly contemporary ink drawings to the lower margin of pp. 65 and 290 of vol II; small penciled note and underlining to pp.127 and 128 of vol. III. A couple of pages at the rear of vol II are coming loose at the gutter, otherwise a good, well margined example.
