ISLANDS FAR AWAY: Fijian Pictures with Pen and Brush.

Second revised edition, with extra pictures and "paper better adapted to the drawings". Signed by the author. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt with black illustration to spine and front panel. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean. The spine is a little faded, the tips rubbed and pushed. Lightly rubbed to edges with a few light surface marks. Light spotting to endpapers, the page block edges a little dusty. Altogether a sound copy. Scarce signed.

Signed by the author in black ink to the front free endpaper. Above her signature, she has written "Batley and District Hospital Bazaar / November 1926" (the book probably donated for a prize). Agnes Gardner King (1856-1929) was born in Ilkley, Yorkshire, and for the final twenty years of her life resided in Wroxham, Norfolk. An artist and illustrator, she was also a prolific traveller, visiting Europe, Canada, Australia. This volume, generously illustrated with eighty of the author's drawings and two fold-out maps, is an account of her trip to Fiji in 1912, where she was encouraged to visit by Sir Everard Thurn (Governer of Fiji, 1904-1910), who provides an extended introduction.
