TRAVELS AMONG THE GREAT ANDES OF THE EQUATOR

First edition, first printing. Original beige cloth with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and upper board. With a fold-out map housed in a pocket at the rear. Illustrated throughout with black and white engravings. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities a little worn, the gilt faded from the spine and the cloth darkened. The contents, with a little spotting to the prelims, are otherwise clean throughout.

An account of an expedition to the Andes, undertaken primarily so that Whymper could collect data on altitude sickness. Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was a British mountaineer and explorer best known for being a part of the first ascent of the Matterhorn which ended in tragedy for much of the party.
