First edition, first printing. Octavo. Handsomely bound by Bayntun in half navy blue crushed morocco over blue linen boards. The boards ruled in gilt; the spine with five raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt and with titles in gilt. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 16 further black and white photographic plates. A near fine copy, the binding square, firm and bright with some very slight sunning to the spine and a touch of rubbing to the top of the upper joint. The contents with just the very occasional spot of light foxing are otherwise clean and bright throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A lovely copy.
A nicely illustrated account of the author's twenty-six seasons climbing and wandering in the French and Swiss Alps.
