First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original blue cloth blocked in yellow to the spine, in the Y.Ellis illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with just a little bumping at the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with a few foxing spots to the prelims, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the good or better, rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that has a chip at the head of the spine just touching the title. Not price-clipped (7/6 net to the lower front flap). Scarce in dustwrapper.

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half title "For Wullie / Who knows all the answers / With every good wish / 28 September 1939". The fifth of nine novels to feature the wealthy and eccentric amateur detective Mr Pendlebury. (Hubin).
