First edition, first printing of the author's first children's novel. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original blue cloth with illustration and titles in brown, white and red to the upper board and spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 5 further colour plates by Amy and Angela Brazil throughout the text. A near very good copy, the binding square and sound with rubbing and minor fraying to the board corners, more so to the tips of the darkened spine. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. Other than a little spotting to the prelims the pages remain clean throughout. Scarce in signed state.

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half title "Mabel Deakin / With A Brazil's love / Xmas 1904". The first published novel from one of the first British writers of modern schoolgirls' stories.
