The ninth novel by the critically acclaimed Polish science fiction writer, follows an astronaut who returns to Earth after a 127-year mission. First published in 1961 by Czytelnik, the novel appeared during what would later be regarded as Lem's literary "golden age", the same year that 'Solaris' (widely considered his masterpiece), 'Memoirs Found in a Bathtub', and the short-story collection 'The Book of Robots' were released. The book later served as the basis for a 1989 Soviet television adaptation, starring Valery Solovyov as Hal Bregg.
