An alternate-history fix-up novel composed of six interconnected short stories and a coda: 'The Lady Margaret', 'The Signaller', 'The White Boat', 'Brother John', 'Corfe Gate', 'Lords and Ladies', and 'Coda'. The earliest of these to appear in print was 'The Signaller', published in the science-fiction magazine 'Impulse' in 1966. The collection first appeared in book form two year later published by Rupert Hart-Davis, though that edition omitted 'The White Boat'. This Gollancz edition marks the first time the novel has been published in the UK in its complete form. A classic of science fiction.
