First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the L. Robert Ischirky illustrated dustwrapper. With a typed, signed letter from de Camp loosely laid in. A very good copy, the binding firm, the extremities a little rubbed. There are a few small light marks to the closed text block edge which bleed slightly onto the margins, the contents are otherwise clean and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the rubbed and creased dustwrapper that has some short tears with minor loss at the extremities.

Signed by L. Sprague de Camp in blue ink on the front free endpaper. Also with a loosely laid in signed typed letter dated 1973 from de Camp to the science fiction editor Malcolm Edwards turning down a request to write a piece on J. R. R. Tolkien due to a busy schedule and a broken rib. A time travel novel set in ancient Rome.
