First edition, first printing. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Robert Breck illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated with four black and white plates by Breck. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth a touch faded at the spine and extremities and with light mottling to the rear panel. There is some light spotting to the closed text-block edge, the contents are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased original dustwrapper which has chipping and short tears at the spine tips. Not price-clipped ($3.00 on the front flap).

A science fiction novel set in a future in which humans have been genetically engineered for centuries. It was originally serialised in two parts in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine in 1942 and is published in one volume here for the first time. It was awarded a 'Retro' Hugo award for Best Novel in 2018.
