YORK MINSTER: A CATALOGUE OF MEDIEVAL STAINED GLASS. FASCICULE 1: THE WEST WINDOWS OF THE NAVE. Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi. Great Britain - Volume III.

First edition, first printing. Original black paper-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout with black and white diagrams of the stained glass panels and with a gallery of 31 colour and black and white plates at the rear. With two envelopes of photographic negatives of the plates loosely laid in, as issued. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities very slightly rubbed, with a tiny bump to the bottom edge of the rear board. There is a faint impression of a previous owner's erased pencil inscription to the front free endpaper, the contents are otherwise clean and bright throughout. The envelopes containing the negatives were originally tipped in on the rear pastedown, the adhesive has since failed and they are now loosely laid in. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased original dustwrapper that has a short closed tear with associated creasing to bottom edge of the rear flap.

The first part in a comprehensive study of the stained glass in York Minster. This volume is concerned with the west window and its neighbours, the largest single area of glass in the Minster. The catalogue contains a description of each panel of stained glass, restoration diagrams and a number of essays that place the glass in a wider cultural and historical context. The photographs, taken in the studio or from scaffolding, offer a rare and unique glimpse of these beautiful medieval artworks up close. David O'Connor is a lecturer in Art History at the University of Manchester who has published multiple volumes on stained glass and the historical art of York. Thomas French (1917-2001) worked with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England for over thirty years as Senior Archeological Investigator. He spent much of his career at York Minster, cataloguing, studying and writing about thousands of archaeological and historical items in the Minster's archives and the countless significant features of the building. He was Trustee of the York Glaziers Trust, a member of the Local Advisory Committee for the Dean and Chapter of York Minster, honorary member of the York Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, and member of the York Minster Fabric Advisory Committee (Monuments Men and Women Foundation).
