First edition with these illustrations. Hardcover. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Top edge red. Deckled fore- and bottom edges. Beautifully illustrated with a black and white frontispiece and 11 further black and white wood engravings by Clare Leighton throughout, as issued. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth just a little faded to the spine, with a couple of light marks and rubbing to the extremities. The top-stain is just a little faded. The contents, with some toning to the closed text block and offsetting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. A lovely copy.
Emily Brontė's timeless gothic romance set on the Yorkshire Moors, strikingly illustrated with woodcuts by Clare Leighton. Leighton was a prolific, successful illustrator who expressed her love of nature and country life through her work during a period in which society was increasingly focussed on technological advancement and urbanisation. The first woman to produce a book about wood engraving, she became one of the most renowned practitioners of the art form.
