Original quarter burgundy cloth with blue boards, titles in gilt to the spine and the author's initials in gilt to the upper board, in the Fred Marcellino illustrated dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square, firm and bright. There is spotting to the closed text-block edge, the contents are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions. Complete with the fine original dustwrapper that is without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped ($12.95 on the upper front flap).

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half-title "For Harold Stephens / D M Thomas - [underlined]". The author's third novel, consisting primarily of a fictional exchange between a female patient and the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Winner of the 1981 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Cheltenham Prize for Literature and shortlisted for the 1981 Booker Prize.
