First edition. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Top edge dark red. With four black and white plates, six black and white illustrations, and eight black and white line-drawn maps throughout. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh, with just a touch of rubbing to the spine tips and extremities. The contents, with a little spotting to the top edge of the closed text block and a previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper, which has a tiny closed tear to the lower rear spine fold, and is otherwise without fading or loss. Not price-clipped.
'This is the first major study of the Vikings who travelled east, based on the evidence of written sources and archaeology, drawn from a wide field and much new material. [...] The evidence presented here helps to account for the richness of Scandinavian literature, art and mythology in the Viking Age and the period which followed it' (publisher's blurb).
