First illustrated edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with silver titles and illustration to the upper board and spine in dustwrapper. Top edge purple. Illustrated throughout with engravings by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked pictorial dustwrapper that remains bright and without loss. A lovely example of the first illustrated edition.

'The Old Man and The Sea' was Hemingway's last major work of fiction published in his lifetime. The novella was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953, and it was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954.
