The author's second novel, first published in the USA in 1989 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Inc. and simultaneously in Canada by Collins Publishers, Toronto. Winner of the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, it is the first novel written by a US-born Hispanic author to do so. The basis for the 1992 Academy Award-nominated film 'The Mambo Kings', directed by Arne Glimcher and starring Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas.
