Second edition, first printing (the first revised edition). Three volumes. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to spines and red top edges, in dustwrappers. Top edge red. Fold out map to the rear of each volume. A lovely very near fine set, the bindings square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The red top edge is bright and without fading. The contents, with a small name erased from the top edge of the front endpaper of each volume, and a small hole to the front endpaper of 'The Two Towers', are otherwise clean and bright throughout. The closed text block edge faintly spotted. The maps are in fine condition and without tears. Complete with the original and correct, very good or better dustwrappers that are rubbed to the fold edges and nicked to the corners, without loss. Not price-clipped (25s net to the lower front flap of each volume).
An important edition of Tolkien's masterpiece, featuring a new foreword by the author, a new dustwrapper design and Tolkien's revisions to the first edition text throughout. (Bleiler; Hammond & Anderson A5e).
