THE HOLY BIBLE. Translated from the Latin Vulgate. Diligently Compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and Other Editions, in Divers Languages. The Old Testament, First Published by the English College at Douay, A.D. 1609. And the New Testament, First Published by the English College at Rhiems, A.D. 1582. With Annotations, References, and an Historical and Chronological Index. The Whole Revised and Diligently Compared to the Latin Vulgate.

Contemporary full dark green calf, upper and lower boards decorated in blind and gilt, five raised bands gilt-lined and with gilt-decorated compartments, title stamped in gilt on a red morocco label to the spine. 8vo. Outer board edges decorated in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Black and white frontispiece. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, with mild rubbing, scuffing and bumping to the extremities. The text block edge is lightly marked to the top and bottom. The contents, with a small ink inscription struck out in black ink to the blank front free endpaper, and a little spotting to the prelims, are otherwise clean throughout.

An attractive example of the Douay–Rheims Bible, one of the earliest English translations of Scripture rendered from the Latin Vulgate rather than directly from the original Hebrew and Greek texts. Produced by English Catholic scholars in exile, it emerged in response to Protestant translations such as the Geneva Bible and later the King James Version, offering an authoritative English Bible faithful to Catholic doctrine and tradition.
