First deluxe edition, first printing. Original quarter leather over brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine and a gilt labyrinth design by Jeff Clements to the upper board. Top edge brown. Housed in the original card slipcase. With map endpapers, a frontispiece and 12 colour plates by J. R. R. Tolkien, seven of which were coloured by H. E. Riddett. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with a scuff to head of the spine, the contents are clean and bright throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the structurally sound slipcase which is lightly rubbed to the extremities.
