The author's eighteenth novel, based on the case of a meningitis antibiotic clinical trial conducted by pharmaceutical company Pfizer in 1996 in Kano, Nigeria, which was ultimately declared an 'illegal trial of an unregistered drug' on human participants by the investigating panel (2006: Joe Stephens, Washington Post). The novel was the basis for the 2005 Fernando Meirelles directed film starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz.
