THE ART OF AESCHYLUS

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original grey cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. With a black and white frontispiece. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh, with just a little rubbing to the extreme edges of the spine and extremities. The contents, with light spotting to the closed text block edge and endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the better than very good, rubbed and creased dustwrapper, which has some foxing spots to the underside that are just visible to the printed side, and is otherwise without loss or tears. Not price-clipped ($34.95 to the upper front flap).

The first comprehensive discussion of Aeschylean drama published in English in the 40 years since George Thomson's 'Aeschylus and Athens' (1941). Rosenmeyer's study focuses on many inherent topics found in Aeschylean plays, such as the text, verse forms and structure, style, staging, and chorus, and avoids the popular scholarship trope of analysing the individual plays. As such, the reader, regardless of their level of familiarity with Aeschylus, is able to recognise and appreciate the playwright's literary characteristics in their further studies.
