First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's original light blue paper covers printed in dark blue. With a full page frontispiece and six smaller illustrations throughout the text by Sidney Paget. A very good or better copy, the binding firm with some mild toning, creasing and minor nicks to the extremities. The rear cover has a small tear with a little loss to the outside edge and two small areas of discolouration from the staples. The contents are clean throughout, without loose or torn pages and free from inscriptions or stamps. Uncommon in this condition.
'The Adventure of the Empty House' was Arthur Conan Doyle's twenty-ninth published Sherlock Holmes story. The American edition, published in Collier's Magazine (with illustrations by F. D. Steele) on 26 September 1903, preceded this British issue in The Strand Magazine by a few days. The story was the first of 13 collected in 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' published by George Newnes, with illustrations by Sidney Paget, in 1905. (Green and Gibson A29).
