First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with black titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips and a little wear to the corners, the cloth bright and fresh, and lightly faded to the spine. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. There are a few very faint marks to the closed text-block fore-edge. Complete with the lightly rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that is very slightly faded to the spine and has a 3mm closed tear to the head of the spine and another to the top edge of the rear flap fold. Not price-clipped, with a publisher's paper label over the printed price on to the lower front flap. A very attractive example, uncommon thus.

An abridged version was first published in The American Magazine under the title 'The Red Bull' in December 1938, and the extended book form was first published in the US by Farrar and Rineheart in February 1939.
