The author's first novel and a classic of western literature. 'Shane' tells the story of a mysterious gunslinger who enters the lives of a small farming family who are attempting to hold their own against the hostility of a nearby large-scale rancher. A shorter version was originally serialized in three parts in Argosy magazine, a revised expanded version was first published in book form in the USA in 1949 by Houghton Mifflin. It was adapted into the Academy Award winning film of the same name in 1953 starring Alan Ladd as the titular character. It was later adapted into an ABC television series in 1966 starring David Carradine.
