The second book in Vance's 'Planet of Adventure' series, relating the adventures of Adam Reith, sole survivor of an Earth ship investigating a signal from the distant planet Tschai. Although the novels are thematically linked, each is a self-contained story. When the series was included in the 44 volume Integral Edition of Vance's works (1999-2006), the editors altered the title of the second volume to 'The Wannek'. The author was persuaded to make the change upon learning the meaning of the phonetically identical British demotic term (the offending word was replaced throughout the text).
