Yei Theodora Ozaki was a collector and translator of Japanese folklore and a woman of fierce independent spirit. She spent time living both with her mother in Europe as well as in Japan with her father. She traveled the world, working as a secretary and a teacher to pay her way, gathering stories wherever she went. She married Yukio Ozaki, a Japanese politician and continued to live an adventure-filled and exciting life, translating many traditional Japanese Fairy tales for an English-speaking audience. Her collections remain seminal, as the Brothers Grimm of Asia. This volume is a collection of 11 stories comprising: The Quest of the Sword; The Tragedy of Kesa Gozen; The Spirit of the Lantern; The Reincarnation of Tama; The Lady of the Picture; Urasato, or The Crow of Dawn; Tsubosaka; Loyal, even unto Death, or The Sugawara Tragedy; How Kinu Returned from the Grave; A Cherry-Flower Idyll; and The Badger-Haunted Temple.
