MAGNUS

First edition, first printing. Original red paper-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, in the Ian MacInnes illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a slight bump to the head of the spine. The contents, spotted to the closed text-block edge and the early pages, are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased original dustwrapper that is a little toned and spotted to the rear panel and spine. Not price-clipped (£2.00 on the front flap).

George Mackay Brown's second novel, a fictionalised account of the life of the 12th century Earl of Orkney, Magnus Erlendson, who was proclaimed a saint following a number of miracles that were reported after his execution, and was officially canonised in 1898. It was adapted into the opera 'The Martyrdom of Saint Magns' in 1977 by Peter Maxwell Davies.
