First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with just a touch of rubbing to the spine tips, and a small mark to the upper board. The contents, with just a little spotting to the closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed, price-clipped dustwrapper, which has couple of tiny closed tears at the spine folds to, and a couple of ink marks to the rear panel.
First published in Paris in 1945, the novel later formed the basis for the 1963 French film noir 'L'Aîné des Ferchaux'), directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, and starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. (Hubin).
