First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. A pre-publication presentation copy. Publisher's original grey cloth with silver titles to the spine, in the Anthony Browne illustrated dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth is mildly faded to the extreme top edge and lightly to the spine, with some rubbing to the spine tips and extremities. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, which is just a little faded to the rear spine fold, and is otherwise without loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£5.95 net to the lower front flap).

Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "1st edition. Pre-publication / copy. September 20th 1986 / for Kay, / with happy wishes, / Janni Howker". Winner of the 1987 Somerset Maugham Award and a runner-up for the 1986 Carnegie Medal.
