IN PARENTHESIS. Seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu.

Third impression of the 1937 first edition. Publisher's original beige cloth, with beige titles and gilt borders on a black cloth label to the spine, in dustwrapper. Top edge blue. With a black and white frontispiece, a map, and a black and white illustration at the rear. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little rubbing to the tips of the lightly toned spine, and a tiny bump to the extreme top edge of the upper board. The top-stain is a little dusty and faded. The contents, with some spotting to the endpapers and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper, that is toned to the spine, rear panel and flap folds, and is otherwise without loss or tears. Clipped and re-priced by the publisher (12s 6d net to the lower front flap).

The author's first book, widely regarded as one of the greatest works of World War I poetry. Winner of the 1938 Hawthornden Prize. "In Parenthesis was first published in London in 1937. I am proud to share the responsibility for that first publication. On reading the book in typescript I was deeply moved. I then regarded it, and I still regard it, as a work of genius. [...] Here is a book about the experiences of one soldier in the War of 1914-18. It is also a book about War, and about many other things also, such as Roman Britain, the Arthurian Legend, and divers matters which are given association by the mind of the writer" (from T. S. Eliot's 1961 introduction).
