CITIES OF VESUVIUS: POMPEII AND HERCULANEUM.

First edition. Recent quarter light brown leather and dark brown cloth boards, with gilt titles on a light brown morocco label to the spine, bordered in gilt, and an illustration in light brown leather to the upper board. Housed in the felt-lined brown buckram and marbled paper-covered solander box, with gilt titles on a beige leather label bordered in gilt to the backstrip. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs taken by Werner Forman, floorplans, and line-drawn maps. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, a touch rubbed to the edges and extremities. The contents, with just a little spotting and creasing to the prelims and a hint of toning to the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Housed in the near fine, structurally sound solander box, which has a small scuff to the bottom edge, some darkening to the beige label, and a couple of light spots to the upper board.

A illustrated survey of the buried cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, that were ravaged by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Michael Grant (1914-2004) was an English classicist, numismatist, and former Professor of Humanity at the University of Edinburgh, who authored over 70 works on ancient history and coinage throughout his nearly 60 year-long career.
