First edition, first printing. Publisher's variant reddish brown cloth with black titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which is a little toned to the spine and panel edges. The front flap has been clipped and re-priced 4/6 by the publisher, perhaps suggesting, given the variant cloth, a remainder issue?. An attractive example.
The author's third collection of short fiction comprising sixteen stories, several of which are considered amongst his best supernatural tales, most notable of which are "Tarnhelm; or, The Death of My Uncle Robert" and "The Silver Mask". (Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1653).
