THE PROMISES OF JESUS CHRIST

First edition. Attractively bound in contemporary full vellum, ruled in gilt, with red and blue morocco onlays elaborately decorated in gilt. Decorative gilt turn-ins. Gauffered page edges in red and gilt. Marbled endpapers. Decorative illuminated title page. 23 pages of illuminated text, each with a tissue guard, printed in lithography on rectos only. A very good copy, the binding firm with darkening to the vellum. The contents with a little foxing to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout, the colours remaining bright and bold.

An excellent example of one of the most notable works by the artist, architectural draughtsman, chromolithographer, and expert on book-illumination, Albert Henry Warren (1830-1911). The son of artist Henry Warren (1794-1879) and nephew of John Martin (1789-1854), the celebrated creator of vast apocalyptic canvases, Warren received his training within his familial circle. A multitalented, versatile designer, he became particularly well-known for his work with Owen Jones (assisting in the creation of the influential "Grammar of Ornament" (1856)) as well as for his own expertly-crafted chromolithographic gift books, printed by the pioneering Day & Son. The present work, dedicated to Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Alice, whom Warren was engaged in teaching, forms a series of Jesus' pronouncements from the New Testament. Beautifully composed, it showcases Warren's immense skill as both an illuminator and lithographer. A scarce title, particularly so in such an appealing contemporary binding.
