William Hope Hodgson (1877–1918), an eminent figure in early 20th-century weird fiction, is celebrated for his pioneering contributions to the subgenre of cosmic horror. A former sailor, Hodgson used his nautical experiences to craft stories imbued with a unique blend of maritime adventure and otherworldly terror. This volume, selected and edited by S. T. Joshi collects some of his best short fiction 'The House on the Borderland', 'The Voice in the Night', 'The Mystery of the Derelict', 'The Whistling Room' and 'The Thing in the Weeds' in addition to 'On the Bridge', a poignant prose-poem about the sinking of the Titanic.
