Together with a typed letter signed presenting the book to the 45th President of the United States of America, an original lament in a calligraphic hand for presentation to the President, and an associated compact disc. The book is a fine copy, the binding square and tight, bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout. Complete with the fine original dustwrapper that is without fading, loss or tears.

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the half title "For President Donald Trump / long may the Alliance / continue / Frederick Forsyth / 2017". Together with a typed letter dated March 2017 "Mr President, / It has become plain to me over the past hundred days that we share this - a deep devotion to those hundreds of thousands of fine young soldiers who went out from our two countries to fight for our continuing freedom and democracy. And even more for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us and never came home. In our lifetimes they mostly fought side by side, shoulder to shoulder - a glorious alliance. Long may it continue. Some months ago it occurred to me that I could not think of a single sung lament to honour them. So I wrote one. I tried to persuade American composer Jay Ungar to let me use The Ashoken Farewell, employed by Ken Burns in his TV documentary The Civil War. But he refused. So I engaged British composer Gareth Williams who composed an original and beautiful melody to match the words. Then I had a stroke of luck. I met the beautiful Royal Opera House soprano Melissa Alder, and now it is her voice on the tape. I enclose Fallen Soldier in the hope that it may please you. It is completely nation-non-specific - applying to British Tommies, American GIs, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders. They all fought with us. It occurred to me that we both have commemoration ceremonies coming up - Normandy, Arnhem, Veterans Day - and that Fallen Soldier might feature in your ceremonies as well.
