In 1901 when Muir was 14 he moved with his family from Orkney to Glasgow, an event which had a great impact on the young poet. Muir came to see Orkney - then relatively untouched by the industrial revolution - as a symbolic Eden and the industrial city of Glasgow as Hell, a theme he would revisit many times in his poetry.
