First edition, first printing. Publisher's original dark blue cloth with an illustration of the Sphinx and Great Pyramid in gilt beneath the rays of a shining sun to the upper board, and gilt titles to the spine. A very good copy, the binding firm and bright with just a little bumping to the spine ends. The slightly shaken contents with a small tear to the upper-left corner of the title page (where roughly opened), some pen underling to one text page and light foxing to the text-block edge are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout.
James John Garth Wilkinson (1812-1899) was a homeopathic physician, social reformer, translator and editor of Swedenborg's works, as well as a writer on Swedenborgian topics. Also deeply influenced by the writings of William Blake, Wilkinson produced several of his own esoteric philosophical and medical works which won the admiration and friendship of figures including Henry James, Sr., Ralph Waldo Emerson and Edward Maitland. In the present work Wilkinson presents his holistic view of human health, both physical and spiritual, and also indicates his committed opposition to both vivisection and vaccination. A bright and attractive copy of a scarce title.
